The upcoming Black Widow film starring Scarlett Johannson, Florence Pough and David Harbour will be the first standalone dedicated to the first female superhero introduced into The Avengers. With Scarlett Johannson seemingly not willing to give up the role any time soon, could this film mark the start of a trilogy dedicated to her character?
It took “only” ten years since the first introduction of Scarlett Johannson as the Black Widow of the Marvel Cinematic Universe but at last she finally got what was very well deserved. For years fans have been asking about a solo movie on Natasha Romanoff, to know more about her past, her origins and some facets that might have been left hidden during the films where she appeared in. Now, as we all know –potential spoiler incoming– , Black Widow is set in the past after the events of Civil War, and it will see Natasha face her own past as a spy and some broken relationships left behind her after she joined The Avengers.
Now, almost everybody has been thinking about Black Widow as a standalone film to pay one last tribute to Johannson’s character after her sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame and to have one last chance to see her wearing the suit on the big screen. This said, though, what if there are different plans at Marvel Studios? What if, with this film, there is the will to start a new trilogy that sees Romanoff as the main character? One clue, although small and possibly deceiving, comes from the same Scarlett Johannson: in an interview during last fall she first referred to the new Black Widow film as a “standalone franchise“, and she did it again in a recent social media interview, where she talks about her co-star Florence Pough, as you can see from the clip right here:
The word “franchise” repeated several times in association to Black Widow made the fans of the character started wondering if there is the concrete chance of a trilogy coming up, which it could make sense as long as it’s set in the past (no magical resurrections, please).
There could be at least three potential possibilities for a trilogy, after all. One could see finally involved Budapest, with the Black Widow/Hawkeye team reunited once again for a last time. A second idea could explore the period after Infinity War when Natasha was running things and we could maybe see her tries to track back Clint Barton, while exploring the world after Thanos’ snap. The third chance will involve a change of personnel, with Black Widow eventually featuring the last time of Scarlett Johannson in the MCU: this would see Florence Pough, Yelena Belova in the film and Natasha’s sister-figure, taking up her spot within S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Avengers. Like this, there would be a new Widow “picking up after the boys”…
No matter what are Marvel Studios future plans for the character, we are sure of one thing: Scarlett Johannson masterfully interpreted the character, and we can’t wait to see her suiting up one more time.
